Beat Fatigue: Try These Energy Boosting Foods

Category: Blog

We’ve all had those days. You wake up and an hour later you’re already tired.  Sometimes we let fatigue win.  When you start feeling exhaustion kicking in, it can be instinctive to reach for the nearest cup of caffeine infused coffee.  This does provide a quick fix, however, you are setting yourself up to eventually crash. If you find yourself in this situation, there is a better option…

Try these energy boosting foods next time you need a pick me up. Don’t let fatigue win!

Almonds

Almonds contain magnesium and B vitamins.  These nutrients help quickly convert food to energy.  Insufficient B vitamins can lead to fatigue and irritability.  Low levels of magnesium can cause you to tire more easily during exercise. Thus, almonds being as nutrient-rich as they are, are a great choice when trying to beat fatigue.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is high in fibre, which takes a while to digest. If had for breakfast, oatmeal will keep you fueled through the morning. When you have a stable blood sugar level, you will feel more energized and focused.

Popcorn

Flavored microwave popcorns have so many additives (butter, oil, salt) that they don’t do much by way of boosting your energy.  Air popped popcorn, however, is a whole grain carbohydrate that’s low in calories and helps prevent blood-sugar crashes.  Ditch the chips and stick with popcorn next time you are looking for an energy boosting snack.

Salmon

Salmon is a superfood for many reasons. It contains omega-3 fatty acids. This nutrient has been found to improve memory, reduce depression, boost energy and mood, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol.  Its high protein count also helps make you feel full. It is important that you know the source of the salmon, be sure that it is wild salmon.

Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is rich in healthy fats, protein, and fibre. It is a calorie-dense food that helps prevent hunger and maintain your blood sugar levels. Try peanut butter on your toast in the morning.

Banana

Bananas are filled with fiber, B vitamins, and potassium, all of which promote energy and muscle function. Try having a banana for your pre or post workout snack.
