Eat whole, real foods
As Chiropractors and health practitioners we are asked multiple times per day, what is the best diet? Keto? Paleo? Vegan? My answer – all of them. I say all of them because the basic principle of these diets is to stop eating fake food and sugars. PLAIN. AND. SIMPLE. We tend to over-complicate and feel the need to label our diets (as well as everything else in our lives, it’s in our DNA) when in reality our diets should be straight forward, simple and intuitive.
Feel like you have an addiction to sugar?
Sugar is found in almost all processed foods and in the most unexpected places where sugar really doesn’t belong. But why is it that sugar is in foods where it shouldn’t be? Because sugar is addictive. Through scientific study, sugar has proven to stimulate the same area in the brain as illicit drugs – specifically Cocaine. That stimulation of the brain is what makes sugar so addictive in its nature.
Sugar and the brain
Sugar is not only addictive, but it can also be the root cause of other chemical imbalances in the brain that lead to hyperactivity, ADHD and depression. Not to mention its adverse effects on the human body and its links to diabetes, acne, weight gain, and hormone imbalances. Now, I am not writing this to scare you but to make you aware of exactly what happens when you put sugar and processed foods in your body.
I won’t sugar coat it, when you cut sugar out of your diet, you will experience with-drawl like symptoms much like going cold turkey from drinking coffee every day. Mood swings, appetite change, cravings, headache; these are all things that might happen in the first few days. But the benefit of cutting out processed sugar is life-changing. After just a few days you will begin to think clearer, cravings will begin to subside, and your body will thank you by regulating blood sugar levels and sleep cycle.
Keep it simple
Yes, cutting out sugars and chemicals is much easier said than done but lessening the number of chemicals and sugars, we put on and in our bodies, gives us an all-around happier, healthier body and a more focused mind. At the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter what you call it, just keep what you eat, simple. Cut out processed foods. If you read the label and can’t pronounce anything on the list of ingredients? DON’T EAT IT. If there are more then 5 ingredients on the list? DON’T EAT IT. If you see refined sugar on the list of ingredients? DON’T EAT IT!
